Monash Centre for Inflammatory Diseases
Associate Professor Phil Bardin
Associate Professor Phil Bardin obtained a PhD from Southampton University (UK) working under Stephen Holgate, an eminent researcher in allergy and asthma. His field of study was viruses (particularly rhinovirus), their interaction with asthma and role in exacerbations. In 2000, he accepted a position as Director of Respiratory Research at Monash Medical Centre and commissioned a virus research laboratory. The laboratory is one of only a handful worldwide that is able to conduct studies of RV and its impact on allergic diseases. Recent research has also included studies of RSV in collaboration with David Jans at Monash University and innate immune responses with Bryan Williams at Monash Institute of Medical Research.
Associate Professor Bardin developed one of the first PCR assays for rhinovirus and was principal author of the first research paper to report detection of rhinovirus in human tissues using in situ hybridisation. He initiated studies to confirm infection by rhinovirus of the lower airways, a key issue for further research in this field. Recently a key neutrophil chemokine (ENA-78) released by airway epithelium in response to RV was characterised by the Monash laboratory and replicative rhinovirus infection of fibroblasts was verified.
Associate Professor Bardin has held 15 research grants since 1994 from various government (UK, South Africa, Australia), charitable (Rebecca L Cooper Research Foundation, Asthma Victoria) and industrial sources (Glaxo-Wellcome, ALLSA-UCB, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Schering-Plough). Total research dollars approximately $900,000 overall in 14 years and $355,000 in Australia since 2001. NH&MRC CJ Martin Fellowship, with funding in USA for 2 years (2004, 2005) and funding at Monash for 3 years (2006 – 2008). CHATA ‘near-miss NH&MRC’ funding 2005. NH&MRC grant (with David Jans) for studies of RSV pathogenesis (2007-2009; $470,000).
He is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand; European Respiratory Society; American Thoracic Society. Serves on the Editorial Board of Respiration and as a reviewer for Am J Resp Cell Mol Biol, Clin Exp Allergy, Eur Resp J and Thorax. Associate Editor, Respirology.
