Honours Project
Potassium source in the diets of the haemodialysis and near end-stage renal failure populations
Supervisor: Karen Salamon and July Tweedie
Site: Monash Medical Centre Clayton
Outline
Hyperkalaemia is a common problem seen in haemodialysis and near end-stage renal failure patients. This project proposes to examine which foods are the major contributors of potassium to the diet in MMC patients. The dietary sources of potassium will be determined for different ethnic, age (adult and paediatric) and gender groups using dietary intake records. The results of this project will enable education on potassium restriction to be targeted to various renal populations. This project will also examine dietary related quality of life.
