Second annual medical education symposium 19th March 2010
19th March 2010 Report from Professor Debra Nestel
The Second Annual Medical Education Symposium was held at Gippsland Medical School (GMS) on Friday, March 19. The one-day meeting was entitled, ‘Simulation-based education for medical, nursing and health sciences.’ Seventy participants attended from four states and represented several health professional disciplines although most were from medicine.
The morning session commenced with welcomes from The Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Helen Bartlett and The Dean of GMS, Professor Chris Browne. Associate Professor David Campbell reported on the regional meeting for simulation-based education and then three key note speakers presented. Professor Harry Owen from Flinders University highlighted the role of ‘personal’ planning in learning activities using simulation as an illustration. Associate Professor Simon Cooper from the School of Nursing at Gippsland described an immersive simulation program measuring nurses’ preparedness for managing deteriorating patients. The third keynote was delivered by Associate Professor Marcus Watson from the Skills Development Centre, Queensland Health and the University of Queensland. We were informed of the importance of virtual reality and other technology based simulations and how they may complement other educational methods.
Participants had the opportunity to join two workshops led by faculty with diverse expertise from performance studies, communication, simulation patient methodology and human factors.
The symposium was preceded by an invitation meeting to establish a Gippsland Regional Simulation Strategy. Representatives of health services, training providers, other education and research experts from across the region were invited. The goal was to discuss a strategy for the region to ensure a co-ordinated range of activities and best allocation of resources. Leadership was provided by Professor Peter Brooks (University of Queensland), Associate Professor Jennene Greenhill from Flinders University Rural Clinical School, Associate Professor Marcus Watson, Professor Debra Nestel, Gippsland Medical School and Associate Professor David Campbell, East Gippsland Regional Clinical School and Gippsland Medical School. Twenty-eight participants attended from service, training and education providers across Gippsland. An outcome of the meeting was that a strategy is important and will initially be led by GMS. The date of the next meeting will be announced shortly.
