Warragul DSS is a school for students aged 6-18 years with an intellectual and associated disability within the West Gippsland region. The school has 60 students and 35 staff, a number of whom are paramedical staff or teachers assistants. The school believes all children can learn when an appropriate individualized program is provided within a supportive environment. Family support is a high priority.
Placement Details
A project would be negotiated in line with the interests of the students and the needs of the school at the time of the placement. Such projects may focus on person centred planning, functional behaviour analysis, augmentative communication, family issues etc.
Placement Parameters
Students will work from 8.45am-4.00pm under the supervision of teaching and/or paramedical staff. Students will gain an understanding of disability issues within an educational context. They will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team with a strong family focus. Students can expect to learn strategies for communication and behavioural intervention for specific disabilities

Selection Criteria

Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of disability on children and their families as well as the implications for teaching and learning.
