Sale Specialist School is a purpose built school with attractive secure grounds, well equipped classrooms and a staff who are committed to ensuring each student has the opportunity to succeed in all areas of their school life. The school is a specialist school with teachers and ancillary staff catering for the needs of students with an intellectual disability and many additional needs. Students are aged from 4 years 8 months to 18 years and may be enrolled fulltime or on a dual enrolment basis with a mainstream school.
The school is staffed by trained teachers, teacher assistants, allied health personnel and ancillary staff. Students travel from within the Wellington Shire on transport provided by the Department of Education & Training. Vehicles are wheelchair accessible, equipped with seatbelts and air-conditioning.
Purpose
Sale Specialist School provides excellence in Special Education in a supportive and caring environment through the provision of comprehensive individual learning programs that

Curriculum
Dedicated teachers provide excellent learning opportunities for all students through quality programs based on outstanding teaching and learning practices. Curriculum areas covered include English, The Arts, Mathematics, Health & Physical Education, Information Technology, Science and Civics and citizenship.
Individual Education Plans
Individual Education Plans are developed in consultation with parents/carers and allied professionals. Plans are designed and implemented to meet the needs of and challenge individual students while building on their abilities.
Communication
Communication programs developed in conjunction with the speech pathologist are implemented by all staff across the school. Programs aim to further develop the communication, language, and literacy skills of all students. Assisted, Augmentative Communication techniques and tools are utilized to give non verbal students the opportunity to make choices, make their wants and needs known and communicate with others.
Parental Involvement
The school has an open door policy and welcomes parents and volunteers into the classrooms and values their assistance in a variety of programs.

Placement Details
Placement opportunities available in our setting include-working with children/young people :-
- with an intellectual disability; across the spectrum (from mild to profound)
- with multiple disabilities including physical disability, sensory loss, and emotional/behavioural disorders
-with complex communication needs
As well gaining an understanding of -
- medication and how it affects/changes behaviour
- understanding of sensory issues
- working in a team situation including educators, allied health and medical practitioners and families
- looking at the whole child and working with their abilities, not just focussing on their disability
Placement Parameters
Students will be working as part of a team in a class situation, under the direction of a class teacher. They will have the opportunity to work in both small group and 1-1 situations with our students, in a wide range of academic and social activities. They will also have the opportunity to develop their communication skills while working with students with complex communication needs, using a variety of augmentative communication devices.
Students will be expected to wear neat casual clothing and footwear suitable for the daily activities. A meeting with the principal (or representative) and a tour of the school to meet students and staff are required before the placement commences.
Hours of placement will be 8.45am-3.45pm (negotiable)
