St Vincent de Paul Society - Sale

St Vincent De Paul webpage

Vinnies centres offer good materials, e.g. clothing, manchester, bric-a-brac, furniture for sale to the public at reasonable prices in order to raise money for the conferences to assist the needy.  In these centres the students would be expected to help with sorting, pricing, serving and dealing with queries from the customers and those who come to the store looking for assistance.  They may also be required to ride jockey on the truck to pick up donated furniture and to clear donation bins for delivery to the centre.  The centres also deliver furniture and clothing to the needy (as requested by the conferences) at no cost.
Where practicable the students may also be called upon to sit in on interviews with clients, either in their own home or, in some cases, in the centre office.  They would be accompanied by one or two conference members on these duties and would only be expected to observe how client problems are dealt with.

Placement Details
Possible projects would vary within centres and conferences and any constructive projects suggested by the students would be taken on board and considered.
Placement Parameters
After training, the students would be expected to work with minimal supervision.
The hours would be those of the centre concerned - mainly 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
Opportunities to develop communication skills with not only a particular population, but also with the general public.
Understanding when delivering goods required by the needy, or when taking part in interviews with the clients.
Teamwork is an essential part of our work.
Selection Criteria
We understand the students will be required to attend in pairs.  However, apart from working in the centre itself, they would be working alone with at least one of our members or volunteers when working outside the centre.
The only skills necessary are being able to show compassion for the needy – this does not mean being able to advise them, but rather not showing disinterest in their situation.
