Morwell Park Primary School webpage
Morwell Park Primary School, in central Latrobe Valley, 150km east of Melbourne, services the residential area of Morwell East. The school enrolment is 350 in 2006 which has grown in recent years despite a decreasing population. Morwell Park is one of seven Primary Schools in the rural city of Morwell. The school is a member of the Kurnai Cluster of schools for the Innovation and Excellence program.
The school’s facilities include a main school building incorporating 5 classrooms, administration, staff room, art room, multipurpose room, gymnasium, library, computer / information technology lab, canteen and storage area. The high proportion of relocatable classrooms is of concern to school council and community and the fluctuation of enrolments does cause concern with classroom space at a premium.
The school is in an area of high government housing and is within a Neighbourhood Renewal area. The Student Family Occupation index is 0.7164 with approximately 70% of students from a family in receipt of a health care card. Over the passed year the school has had an influx of students from Sudan via African refugee camps.
A comprehensive curriculum is supported by ‘Core Knowledge’ expectations in English and Mathematics for each of the 7 year levels Prep – 6. The school is proud of the emphasis placed on the teaching of ‘Core Knowledge’ in literacy and numeracy and the standards required. Coupled with the school’s emphasis on ‘Core Knowledge’ is the emphasis on student welfare. Morwell Park is a caring school. A breakfast program is offered which has been supported by Quantum Youth Services and local businesses who have donated breakfast foods including cereal, milk and fruit. Teachers and parent volunteers have provided the ‘person power’ to ensure the program’s success. On each day 2 – 5 different lunchtime activities are on offer, coordinated and supervised by teachers. The school views student management and personal development highly.
Morwell Park has been accredited for meeting the standards of Performance and Development Culture and has served as a reference school in the region. Teachers have a sound approach to professional learning and development and work successfully in school teams.
Placement Details
Morwell Park is within a ‘neighbourhood renewal’ area and subsequently services many socio economically challenged families. Students may come from families of dysfunction including mental health issues, substance abuse, family violence and anti-social behaviours. Student welfare practices are integral to the school’s program and placement at Morwell Park will provide an opportunity to view the impact of family dysfunction upon the educational, social and emotional development of children and practices which may redress this impact.
Health intervention projects could be centred around mental health issues, substance abuse, nutrition, mentoring or other positive health promotion projects such as developing appropriate hygiene skills. Opportunities to work with students and/or families would be available.
Placement Parameters
Students would be expected to utilise their current expertise and apply it to the school setting within the scope of their knowledge and skills. Clearly students would need to be appropriately ‘inducted’ into the schools culture however given an appropriate level of understanding student would be expected to take the initiate and responsibility of their project / placement.
School hours are from 8.30am – 3.00pm with student present however the school is open from 7.30am to 5.30pm most days (Mon – Fri)
Students would be required to develop a placement project which would serve a mutually beneficial outcome. This would be largely dependent upon the students pre-existing attributes and those which they deem important to develop.
Selection Criteria
Students would be appropriately inducted into the school.
A working with children certificate would be necessary.
Students should have an enjoyment of primary age children and be willing to interact appropriately.
