Moe Life Skills Community Centre (MLSCC) is an adult and community education centre that provides people with disabilities a range of meaningful day options across a variety of community settings, accredited further education courses, and work place opportunities.

What we want at MLSCC is to see people with disabilities sticking up for themselves and doing the right thing at home, at the centre, and down the street.
We want people to learn so that they can have power to control their lives and do the things they want to do.

Placement Details
Broad Aim: Promoting health and well being
Topics can include:
1. Disability and Sexuality: ‘Who am I’ – the important question (eg What is happening to me, what will happen to me, what choices do I have, where do I get information, how can I get information, how do I feel about it, what do I think about it)
2. Mental health and well-being – What is it? (eg recognising symptoms, getting help and staying well – self-help strategies/seeking health professional support)
3. Improving health with diet and exercise (eg importance of a healthy lifestyle and how to get one)
4. Happy Feet – steps to good foot health (eg signs, symptoms, cause, treatment and prevention)
Placement Parameters
MLSCC operates between 8.30am – 4.00pm Monday – Friday (day options)
3.30 – 6.00pm Tuesday and Thursday (education programs)
Graduate students will be expected to work in current programs with support from staff – there will be opportunities to lead small groups and work one-on-one with students and participants
Graduates can expect to:
Develop an up-to-date knowledge of the services and facilities available in the community to people with disabilities
Develop an understanding of the issues experienced by people with an intellectual disability and their families living in the community
Develop skills in creating and maintaining an environment that empowers people with a disability and their families
Identify and utilise specific communication methods to interact with people with disabilities
Competent in the use of information and communication technolgies
Selection Criteria
A strong interest in working with people with disabilities
A demonstrated understanding and commitment to the rights of people with an intellectual disability
An approach that is flexible, responsive, and respectful to the needs of people with a disability and promotes and,
Supports inclusiveness and diversity
Maintains client and employee privacy and confidentiality
Ability to work as part of a team and lead small groups
