Support & Community Services deliver the following activities/program areas:

(Currently, services are offered to adults with a supported disability between the ages of 18-70 year).

Futures/Day Programs

Support & Community Services offer training/skill development and recreationally community based activities to clients of our service. Accredited and non accredited training are delivered within this service area together with opportunities for clients to partake in work placements, volunteering, sport & recreation activities and life skills training. Clients achievements and activities relate to their aspirations and are chosen by them to assist in meeting identified goals. Community inclusiveness, participating and community awareness are seen as a priority in obtaining successful outcomes.

Respite

Saturday Respite operates fortnightly of a Saturday between the hours of 8am – 3pm. The program takes a two fold approach in that it provides respite to families/carers whilst also providing people with a disability the opportunity to participate in skill & recreational opportunities within the community and within a non threatening environment whilst supported by staff.

In addition to the above S&CS also provide one on one respite to individuals requiring additional assistance.

Adult Day Activity Support Service (ADASS)

ADASS operates twice weekly – Monday 10am – 3pm and Thursday evening 4pm – 9pm. ADASS provides families/carers respite whilst catering to the needs of participants. Participants determine the activities within the program and within the resource boundaries. Another community inclusive activity area offered by i-GAIN.
Placement Details
Whilst at i-GAIN students will have the opportunity to observe people with a variety of disabilities and the day to day barriers they face in becoming involved in their local communities. They will observe not only the physical barriers but also the emotional ones and the unfounded myths that are held by some members of our communities. Being able to do this in a rural environment will also bring additional insights for the students around the additional issues that are faced by people with disabilities due to isolation. They will gain an understanding of the importance that good practices around Health and Wellbeing can have on the quality of life for people with disabilities. The students will also have an opportunity to undertake some evaluative research on two separate projects not only for i-GAIN but for people with disabilities, families, carers and significant others. These will take the form of documentingoutcomes for clients in relation to community inclusion and the benefits of the process, including any benefits this has on physical and mental wellbeing.
Placement Parameters

  • Will the student(s) be expected to take initiative and work autonomously with minimal supervision? Or will they be closely supervised in a highly structured placement with defined tasks and activities?
  • Initially closely supervised moving onto initiative when the Evaluation process commences.
  • What are the hours of the placement?
  • 9.00am to 4.00pm
  • Given CBP forms a core part of medical student’s personal and professional development, what are the key skills they can develop in this placement? E.g. opportunities to develop communication skills with a particular population; ability to better understand interdisciplinary care and teamwork?
  • Different forms of communication that people with disabilities use e.g. signing.

Selection Criteria
Students will need to have an inclusive approach to working with adiverse range of clients. While students are in the proximity of our clients they will be fully supervised, however they may be subjected to behaviours that are foreign to them eg soiling, challenging behaviours, non-verbal, vision and hearing impairments and in many cases coupled with an intellectual disability.
