Placement Details

  • Analyse current information / resources to develop an information package suitable for Medical Practitioners, hospitals and allied health staff.
  • Develop a PowerPoint presentation on ABI that is relevant for Medical Practitioners, hospitals and allied health staff
  • Seek out appropriate funding to plan and facilitate an information session for Medical Practitioners in the region.
  • Develop an information package suitable for 1st year medical students in the most suitable format.
  • Survey Health Agencies to determine knowledge of ABI and Headway Gippsland - how do they source information on acquired brain injury - internet, other service providers etc.
  • Research the importance of a neuropsychological assessment - what it is, and GP's awareness of this particular assessment and how it may reflect on medications prescribed?
  • Research project - from hospital to where?
  • Barriers faced by low socio -economic populations to access health services in a rural setting.
  • Develop suitable fact sheets for consumers regarding: the importance of regular health checks, diabetes, cholesterol levels, heart disease. - physical activity / health - depression / mental health- Drug & alcohol - memory aids
  • Participate in a radio station segment - question / answer session
  • Promote volunteerism
  • How does the new Privacy Act impact on service delivery by medical and / or health agencies.
  • Identify gaps in information resources of Headway Gippsland to its own service.
  • Assist with applications for funding from government and non-government bodies
  • Any other idea's that a student may have.

Placement Parameters
The student(s) will be expected show initiative and work both autonomously and with some supervision. The work environment provides for supervision as required by the student(s) but it would be hoped that this need would lessen as the student gains knowledge and confidence over the course of the placement.

Hours of placement: Wednesdays 9.30am-4.30pm

Professional development: Our target group cuts across many groups. Some of which include: disability, complex communication needs, low socio-economic, CALD, the socially isolated and those with challenging behaviours.
During the course of the placement students will be expected to meet with and interview those affected by ABI, family members and service providers in order to understand the issues from all perspectives.
Dependent on options selected by the student(s) at the end of the placement the student will have gained knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • The effects of ABI on the person and their families.
  • The daily challenges faced by those with ABI.
  • Services available to those with ABI and their families
  • Assessment and assessment tools.
  • Resourcing
  • Barriers to services
  • ABI as a hidden disability
  • The link between ABI and poor physical and mental health in both the person with the injury and the carer.
  • On the constraints around the ABI sector as opposed to other disabilities.
  • Communication strategies
  • Privacy and confidentiality
  • Public speaking

Selection Criteria
The student will need to have some computer skills - specifically in Word, Power Point and the Internet. Some knowledge on privacy and confidentiality would be advantageous. The student will ideally have an approach that is patient, empathetic, non judgemental and value fair. The student(s) will have a strong focus toward the empowerment and self determination of the individual.
