We provide supports based on each person’s identified needs, interests, dreams and aspirations. We are committed to achieving the vision of the Victorian State Disability Plan 2002-2012, which includes enhancing opportunities for people with a disability to participate and fully engage in their local community with the same rights and responsibilities as all other citizens. This is achieved through the delivery of individualised supports based on a Person Centred Approach.
Self advocacy and empowerment are also a key focus within the organisation with individuals being supported to ensure they have greater input into decision making processes that affect their lives. We employ a speech therapist 2 days per week to work with staff and members to ensure communication skills are developed and maintained.
We believe in the importance of people with a disability, effectively communicating and being able to express their views, decisions and make informed choices. We work diligently to build strong partnerships with the community including both disability specific and generic services. We aim to develop people’s independence both in the community and their living skills, we stimulate and develop people’s interest in recreation and leisure options, education, art (visual and performing) and support people to investigate possibilities of employment (paid/volunteering).
Placement Details
To develop a healthy lifestyle program aimed at increasing awareness of healthy food options and benefit of regular exercise (either passive or active).

In conjunction with Speech Therapist, assist in Sensory Program (this involves observation and assessment of individual sensory preferences).
Placement Parameters
Students would be expected to show a level of initiative once familiar with their respective work environment (includes staff, members, routine).
Given that the placement is only 12 single days over a 12 month period, it would be in the best interests of staff and members if students were under the guidance and supervision of permanent staff (but this level of supervision would be determined by staff person/s).
Placement hours: 8.30am – 4.00pm.

Selection Criteria

It is an expectation that students would demonstrate a mature and professional approach in all aspects of placement. Desirable that students have a basic knowledge of Cooinda Hill operations (www.cooindahill.asn.au) and an understanding of Community Development and “Community Inclusion”.
