Case Management & Transition Support – In Schools
Berry Street has had a youth worker located in Traralgon College, and a youth worker/counselor in Lowanna College. These workers provide assessment, intervention and linkage to students at risk of early school leaving. In addition we have a Wellbeing Worker at Commercial Road Primary School 2005, who role is too work and support their students and families to engage fully in their school community and improve educational outcomes for their students.
Employment Learning Coordinator – Latrobe Neighbourhood Renewal Areas
The Employment Learning Coordinator (ELC) focuses on Neighbourhood Renewal areas. The ELC offers support, advice, assistance and links to provide young people and adults who live in the NR Renewal areas in order to connect them to specific employment, training and education opportunities.
Reaching More Kids – Latrobe Community Plan-It Youth Mentoring Project
The Reaching More Kids – Latrobe Community Plan-It Youth Mentoring Project is an early intervention program focusing on young people whose connections to education and social and community relationships need to be strengthened. Positive promotion of education and employment pathways to young people, with the development of motivational strategies and practical assistance by mentors are core components in the process of supporting this project reach out to young people.
Aiming High Plan-It Youth Mentoring Project
The Aiming High Mentoring Program is aimed at young people between 10-25 years who are disengaged or at risk of disengagement from schools, training and other community services. This project is directed to young people who are at risk of offending or are facing court, young people with special needs including mental health/health issues, or those who experience social isolation. The program offers young people an opportunity to develop a one to one relationship with a more experienced adult from the local community.
Gippsland Wilderness Program
The Gippsland Wilderness Program provides support to young people in early secondary school, aged between 12-15 years. The program facilitates 4 wilderness camps annually and provides support to students so they can be maintained at school. Gippsland Secondary Schools refer students to the GWP and is funded in partnership with the Department of Educational and Early Childhood Development.
Dare To Make Change Program
Positive choices and anger management small group programs delivered to over 30 young people per annum on average. This program is funded on a fee for service basis through a partnership developed with School Focus Youth Service.
ScACE
School/Adult Community Education Program(s) Latrobe & BawBaw is a partnership between Berry Street and three major Secondary Colleges- Traralgon, Kurnai and Lowanna Secondary College and now in West Gippsland with Warragul Regional College. This partnership allows young peopled aged between 13-15 and identified as being at high risk, to engage in BSV’s programs and still remain students of their schools.
Children and Adolescent Support Services Intensive Support in Education (CIRC)
This service provides educational support ser The CIRC Programs assists young people through individually planned educational and vocational programs to reintegrate into education, build social connectedness and recreational and vocational opportunities.
Best @ The Shed – Independent Registered School
BSV Gippsland opened a campus of our Noble Park “Best School” in October 2006, and has 27 registered students.
Jobs Placement, Employment & Training Program (JPET)
JPET provides support and assistance to 15 – 21 year olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and who face multiple barriers to participation in education, training & employment. JPET offers small group programs to assist young people develop their pre-employment skills, work readiness and personal effectiveness capabilities through one-to-one support and small group sessions.
Youth Transition Support Initiative
Support Workers are responsible for the provision of integrated advice, guidance and personal development opportunities to help remove the barriers to learning and progression and to ensure that these young people make a smooth transition to adulthood and working life.
School Re-engagement Programs
Young Willing & Able – Community based programs
The Young Willing & Able Program is about the delivery of education and training through small group programs. The program helps young people develop the necessary skills to maximize their employment potential.
Go For VCAL -Community Based VCAL
This program provides a structured educational program to support approximately 16 young people to achieve Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning (VCAL) in Latrobe City. Young people aged 15 -17 years are assisted to achieve academic progress at a Foundation entry level. This program is a partnership between BSV and Traralgon Secondary College and is supported by the BawBaw Latrobe Local Learning Employment Network. BSV has MOU with IGAIN Quality Learning, GippsTAFE, TRY Youth & Community Services for the delivery of accredited / industry training for students base don students individual pathway and personalised learning plan.
Young Mums VCAL -Community Based VCAL
This program provides a structured educational program to support between 6-8 adolescent mothers achieve educational goals through the VCAL. The program is based in Morwell and services young women from all areas within Latrobe City. .
Go for Work –Course in Planning For Employment & Training
Provides an accredited small group work program to support young people aged 15 & upwards to increase their personal effectiveness and employment readiness skills. The program supports young people who are early school leavers to maximise their involvement in education, training or employment and operates from Morwell.
Adolescent Residential Care Service
This service provides supported accommodation and care for adolescents aged 12 – 16 years who are clients of Child Protection or Youth Justice, and are unable to live with their families.
Case Management /Adolescent Support Programs
These programs offer intensive support to young people aged 13 - 17 years on statutory orders, who exhibit ‘at risk’ or difficult to manage behaviours or have not been able to engage other services..
Home Based Care Program
This service, which operates across Gippsland, provides accommodation for 10 young people whose accommodation and support needs are best meet by living with carers in their own homes, in the community. Some of these young people are identified as having behaviours that place them at high risk; others may have a disability or other special needs, while some young people required consistent care and support and encouragement to reach their potential. Placements vary from emergency and short term to longer term; depending on the young person’s need. Significant caregiver support is also an integral part of this program.
Placement Details
Placement opportunities would be provided in BSV’s Mentoring programs and Youth Transition programs.
Students will be able to work with young people and program staff to identify & articulate a framework for Berry Street Gippsland Mentoring and Transition Programs involving the key concepts of “Youth Particpation and engagement”..
Key aspects of the project would involve identifying the interplay between meeting government compliance and policy frameworks for client participation, and Berry Street’s service provision models and capacity to engage and empower young people to participate and achieve their personal goals.
Key aspects of this project would be to undertake discussions, focus groups and develop questionnaires in order to:
- Identify barriers faced by young people in accessing services relevant to the individual’s health and wellbeing.
- Document the impact of social and public policy on individual’s participation in programs.
- Document and analyse how and why Berry Street deliver their services and current methods of delivery can assist in the promotion of social recovery, health and wellbeing.
- Articulate benefits for youth participation and engagement in the development of further services promoting mentoring as a way to increase personal and social health and wellbeing.
- Articulate the relationships between data, information, evidence, knowledge and identify how this informs Berry Street’s work in youth participation and engagement programs.
Two students will be located 1 day a week with the Reaching More Kids Plan-It Youth Mentoring Project and Aiming High Youth Mentoring Project and two students will also be placed 1 day a week working in the Employment Education and Transition Programs.
Placement Parameters
Expectations
The students will work with supervision; however they will be working along side Project Worker for Aiming High - Naome Dessent and Reaching More Kids Co-ordinator Lyn Simmons.
One day per week
Students will develop opportunities to enhance their communication, teamwork skills.
They will also be able to gain a greater knowledge of the issues facing early school leavers
The will also be able to assess the benefits that community members can have in motivating and supporting disadvantage youth engage more fully in education and learning through life skills development and mentorship.
Selection Criteria
Students will present a valid police check and working with children certificate to their field educator at the commencement of placement
Students are not permitted to drive agency vehicles, or to transport clients under any circumstance
Students will undertake a work place orientation.
Student will not responsible for any client service provision
Students will require good communication and interpersonal skills
Students must demonstrate an ability to relate to young people
