Admission requirements

The MBBS course at Monash University Clayton Campus is only available to:

• current Year 12 students; or
• applicants who have completed VCE (or equivalent) within the previous two years and have not commenced tertiary studies.

Applicants who fall outside of these requirements may wish to consider graduate entry Medicine at Gippsland campus.

Prerequisites for Year 12 students

Students studying Year 12 are required to obtain a study score equivalent to at least 35 in English (ESL) or 30 in any other English and a study score of at least 30 in Chemistry in VCE (or equivalent) with the ATAR floor of 90. However, to be competitive, results need to be at least equivalent to an ATAR of 95 or above, be at least equal to or greater than 3 A's at "A Level" including an A for Chemistry, IB results of 39 overall or greater or a MUFY overall score of 355 or greater.
For students who have not studied Year 12 Biology, the Faculty provides a bridging program.

For further information on this program please contact: biology-bridging-course@monash.edu

VTAC application procedures

Students studying Year 12 are required to obtain a study score of at least 30 in English and Chemistry.

The VTAC Guide, containing information about application procedures, is published annually in August by the:

Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre
40 Park Street, South Melbourne,
VIC 3205
Telephone: 1300 364 133
Applications must be submitted to VTAC during August or September.

UMAT

All applicants (other than international applicants) are required to sit an aptitude test. The UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) is the aptitude test required for admission to the Monash undergraduate-entry MBBS course.

The UMAT examination is usually conducted in late July. See the UMAT website for registration and examination details

Selection into all streams of the MBBS will be based upon a combination of the applicant UMAT, ATAR and performance at a Multiple Mini interview. The interview is an equally important component of the selection process (see information below).

Applicants who have sat for UMAT in two consecutive years can elect to use the better overall UMAT score. If you expect to change citizenship status to become an Australian permanent resident, you should sit the UMAT.

As ACER does not give special consideration for UMAT results, please read the instructions carefully about the provisions in place for unanticipated illness and cases of demonstrable difficulty.  Monash University does not make any concession for results once they are supplied to us by ACER.

Selection procedure

Selection into the MBBS course is based upon a combination of the applicant’s UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test), academic studies and performance at a MMI (Multiple Mini Interview). Equal weighting is given to each of the three components.

Interviews

Applicants who have met the prerequisites will be called for an interview, with pre-selection based on the overall UMAT score. In addition, applicants for the Dean's Rural List will also be interviewed at this time. Applicants who do not achieve the minimum UMAT score will not be considered. The faculty will determine the cut-off score on an annual basis.

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences will determine those applicants who are to be interviewed.

Final selection

The final ranked list of applicants from which places will be offered will take into account the applicant’s UMAT score, ENTER and performance at interview.

Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

Monash has introduced a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). This proven interview format gives the faculty information that determines which applicants possess the necessary personal qualities required to succeed in the medicine course.

The MMI format allows each applicant to be independently assessed by eight trained interviewers taken from a cross section of the medical and general community.

MMI stations will comprise a series of scenarios and associated questions or tasks focusing on an applicant’s relevant personal qualities, such as:

• motivation;
• communication skills;
• collaboration;
• empathetic reasoning;
• critical thinking; and
• ethical reasoning.

The Monash MMI consists of eight sequential interview ‘stations’ plus a possible rest station. At each station the applicant will be interviewed for eight minutes followed by two minutes for scoring and changeover (ie ten minutes per station) with a ‘circuit’ taking 80 - 90 minutes to complete..

Approximately 600 applicants (in total) may be invited to attend a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).

Pre-selection of December interviews will be based on UMAT scores; additional scholarship-based interviews will be offered in early January 2013.

Applicants cannot request a late interview, except under extenuating circumstances supported by documented evidence.

Only those applicants who attend an interview will remain in the final ranked list and be eligible for a place.

Age Requirement

The Faculty is required to adhere to the University minimum age policy for domestic applicants which can be read here: http://www.adm.monash.edu/admissions/undergrad/entry-requirements/age-requirements.html

International applicants should read the following policy:

http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/3633/international-requirements.html

In addition, applicants who are under 17 years of age at the time of commencement in the course will be required to meet with the Deputy Dean (MBBS), or representative, and may have additional enrolment requirements, such as deferral of their place, imposed upon them. Those who are allowed to enrol will also be required to attend regular meetings which are required (by law) to continue until they have turned 17.

Successful Applicants

On enrolment a medical certificate specifying the student’s current health and immunisation status is required. Students must satisfy the immunisation requirements specified by the Faculty before undertaking clinical placements. Students will also be asked to obtain a National Police Certificate (annual requirement) and a Working With Children check on enrolment in the program. It is highly recommended that students hold or attain by the end of first semester, a current registered Level 2 or Senior First Aid Certificate.

Student Registration

All MBBS students must be registered with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria in order to have access to clinical placements. The faculty will advise students on the procedure as part of the enrolment process.
