The Year 2 (two week) rural health attachments are designed to introduce students to rural communities and rural health practice. Students are placed in Latrobe Valley, West Gippsland and South Gippsland. Students are exposed to rural hospitality and a diversity of experience. Placements include visits to pharmacies, hospitals, complementary therapists and Indigenous sites.
Students undertaking their two-week Year 2 placement spend time with a general practice and have a full day hospital visit. In addition to this, there is a Clinical Skills Day where you will have an opportunity to practice a variety of skills. Experiential learning includes visits to Indigenous health sites, a farm visit and input from senior students and other local health professionals.
Placement tutors often have first-hand experience of rural practice either as recipient of care or as service providers.
There are opportunities for socialising with other Monash medical students from Years 3B, 4C and 5D on rural attachments at the Gippsland Regional Clinical School. Dinners, social occasions and shared accommodation all serve to introduce Year 2 students to the friendly training environment of Gippsland. In addition, students become more aware of future training opportunities.
