Joseph is the Foundation Professor and Director of Aged Care Medicine at Peninsula Health and Monash University and is a practicing consultant physician. This appointment followed the position of Clinical Service Director for Aged Care at the Williamstown Hospital, Western Health. Joseph has a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Fellowship in Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine. Joseph is also an inaugural member of the Clinical Liaison Service at the State Coroner’s Office and the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine investigating the system failures associated with health care related deaths.

Joseph established the Health Services Research Unit at the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University in 1999 after completing a Doctorate of Philosophy examining the epidemiological principles of performance measurement and quality in health care. Joseph’s principal areas of research expertise include quality of clinical care, performance measurement and patient safety, he currently holds the position of a member of the editorial committee for the International Journal for Quality in Health Care and is a director on the Board, Aged Care Standards And Accreditation Agency.

At Monash University, Joseph developed, coordinated and taught in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate education units in quality of care, patient safety, aged care and preventive medicine. Over the past eight years Joseph has been the principal investigator on research grants and contracts on healthcare quality and safety projects worth in excess of $1.5million. 

Joseph continues to publish in national and international journals and serves as a member of the Board of Examiners for the Australian Association for Quality in Health Care, as a clinician surveyor with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.
