Nimalka has joined the Department as a post doctoral research trainee following the award of an MD in Community Medicine from the University of Colombo. After her graduation in 1991 as a doctor, she obtained a Master of Science in Community Medicine. During her 9 years in public health, Nimalka has been engaged in community health activities in delivering primary health care, especially to children and pregnant women in the maternal and child health clinics and schools. She has also been involved in health promotion through education programs, implementation of preventive and control activities related to major public health diseases and training of undergraduates.

Nimalka is a member of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, the central organisation for planning, monitoring and evaluation of immunisation activities and surveillance of communicable diseases.
