Biosketch:

Associate Professor Jun-Ping Liu is currently Head of the Molecular Signaling Laboratory. His research interests include cytokine regulation of cancer cell proliferation by mechanisms of telomerase maintenance of telomeres, and roles of a novel ATPase in neurodegenerative disease. He is currently funded by the NHMRC, ARC and Cancer Council of Victoria.  He graduated with MD in 1985 from Bethune Medical University and PhD in 1991 from Monash University. He was a Queen Elizabeth II Fellow of ARC in 1996-2000, Senior Research Fellow of NHMRC in 1999-2001, Senior Lecturer of Monash University in 2002-2003, and Associate Professor of Monash University from 2004. He was awarded a number of research awards including Inaugural Post-doctoral Investigator Award by the National Association of Research Fellows of NHMRC; A. W. Campbell award for excellence in Neuroscience by the Australian Neuroscience Society; Australian Life Sciences Research Award by Today’s Life Science and Beckman Instruments; and Servier Award by the Endocrine Society of Australia. He has published over 60 papers, including major international journals such as Nature, Science, the FASEB Journal, Oncogene, and Journal of Biological Chemistry. He teaches undergraduates, coordinating cell biology program and also lecturing in immunology and pathology. He has supervised a number of postgraduates. He serves a number of committees including university international advisory committee and faculty research management committee. He is founding President of Australia Chinese Association for Biomedical Sciences (ACABS), founding Vice President of the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA), and visiting professors of a number of universities of China. He was Chairs of a number of international conference symposia and Chairman of the 1st Australia-China Biomedical Research Conference, Melbourne, 2007.

Current Research Focus:
1. Cytokine regulation of telomerase activity in cancer.
2. Mechanisms of telomerase inhibition by small molecules in cancer
3. Structure-function of a novel ATPase in molecular trafficking
