Introduction
The effects of low health literacy go well beyond just poorer health and well-being outcomes; low health literacy has been demonstrated to predict lower levels of engagement by service users with health services and public health campaigns. Consequently, populations who struggle with literacy demonstrate also struggle with chronic condition self-management, show fewer health promoting behaviours, higher rates of hospitalisation, difficulty in verbal communicating with health care providers, and poorer health status in general.
Course Aims
The three-day health literacy short course is designed for those wishing to enhance the impact and effectiveness of their practice, policy and planning by better understanding and responding to the health literacy needs of service users, communities and the health care system. The course will introduce and explore the concept of health literacy; examine how health literacy is related to enhanced individual, community and system outcomes; provide insight and examples about how health literacy outcomes can be enhanced; and examine current approaches to the implementation and/or development of best-practice health literacy practices and programs. There will also be ample opportunity for networking and sharing experiences; working on your own material and policies, and what this may mean for your own practice and approach to policy and planning.
Who can attend this course?
The course is open to anyone involved, or wanting to be involved, in health literacy and health communication. As such, this course is relevant to practitioners, managers, and planners working in the health, community services, education, justice, sport and recreation, not-for-profit, corporate, and government sectors.
