Introduction
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health. This perspective is derived from a concept of ‘health' as the extent to which an individual or group is able, on the one hand, to realise aspirations and satisfy needs, and on the other hand, to change or cope with the environment. Health is seen therefore, as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living; it is a positive concept emphasising social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.
Health promotion represents a comprehensive social and political process, not only embracing actions directed at strengthening the skills and capabilities of individuals, but also action directed towards changing social, environmental, and economic conditions so as to alleviate their impact on public and individual health. Community participation is essential to sustain health promotion action.

Course Aim
The five day course is designed for candidates interested in increasing their understanding of health promotion principles and practices. The Course will cover the core health promotion processes of planning, development, selecting of strategies, implementation and evaluation of programs, as well as contemporary skills in partnerships, alliances, use of settings and dissemination. Case Studies and exercise will allow for practical applications of the concept and frameworks covered in the course.
The Monash University Short Course in Health Promotion is provided to meet the growing demand for Health Promotion in workplaces, communities and organizations. In this course, you will learn about health promotion concepts, frameworks and core skills to increase the success of your health promotion practice and strategies. You will have opportunities to network and share experiences with people with similar interests.
Who can attend this course?
The course is open to any person involved, or wanting to be involved, in health promotion and working in a range of fields, including: health, arts, education, welfare, environment, community, planning, justice, sport and recreation, government, not-for-profit and corporate sectors.
The course will introduce the key principles and concepts of health promotion, community assessment, strategies for health promotion including partnerships, evaluation of programs and frameworks for strengthening health promotion in organisations.
Please note that this course has been approved for 40 category 1 RACGP QA&CPD points.
