The Department of General Practice is actively engaged at an international level to promote general practice training and research. The Department is a pro-active leader in the development and implementation of training and research in China.
Recent key activities include:
Academic Forum
The first Australia-China General Practice Academic Forum and General Practice Trainer Workshop was held in Shenzhen City in China from the 5th-8th May 2011. The conference was organized by Monash University in conjunction with the Journal of Chinese General Practice, Ministry of Health, Shenzhen Government and its Health Commission, Chinese National General Practice Training Centre and Shenzhen Community Health Association. The conference attracted over 600 Chinese general practitioners and community health managers. Monash sent a senior group of staff which included Emeritus Professor John Murtagh (and Dr Jill Rosenblatt), Professor Leon Piterman, Professor Danielle Mazza, A/Professor Lyn Clearihan (and Dr Anthony Palmer), Professor Thomas, Professor Grant Russell, Dr Hui Yang and Mr Christopher Anderson.
Programs
The Department of General Practice hosted training programs for Chinese doctors from July to September 2011. These programs included the Murtagh Master Classes and also lectures on:
- General Practice: what it is and why it is important
- Managing menopause in a community setting
- Primary care mental health
- Communication skills
- Simulate patients training methods using actors
- Issues in cardiovascular health
- Epidemiology and diseases in Australia
- Managing disability in Primary Care
- Issues in cardiovascular health
- Caring for the diabetic patient
- Aged Care in the community
- Assessment of learning – models and methods
- Researching general practice
- Translating research into practice
In addition to a very full academic program key visits were also made by participants to clinics, hospital settings, community settings and to clinical schools. The program was highly valued by the participants and The Department of General Practice looks forward to being engaged in further ventures in 2012.
