Monash University Medical Foundation Board of Management

The Foundation Board of Management comprises:

  • The Vice Chancellor and President or his nominee;
  • The Dean of the Faculty or his nominee; and
  • Members are appointed by the Dean, including members of the academic staff of the faculty.

Mr Rod Chadwick (Chair)

Mr Rod Chadwick (Chair)

Mr Chadwick is also Deputy Chair of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board. He was, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Dunlop Ltd from 1995 to 2001. Currently, he is a business consultant and a company director of several Australian companies and, as well, holds advisory board membership for Oracle Corporation, Australia and New Zealand. He is the immediate past National Deputy President of Australian Industry Group. As an industry leader, his past positions include the Chair of Population Policy Steering Committee, Business Council of Australia; member of the Committee for Melbourne; Director of the Australia/Japan Business Cooperation Council; and member of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai, China. Mr Chadwick is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.

Mr George Pappas (Vice Chair)

Mr George Pappas (Vice Chair)

Mr Papas is also Chair of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board.  He is the Chairman of the Committee for Melbourne, and a Senior Advisor of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) having retired as a Senior Vice President in June 2002. George was recently engaged on a part-time assignment as Under Secretary in the Department of Premier and Cabinet for the State of Victoria, leading a project to develop the State’s future economic strategy. 

After graduation from Harvard Business School in 1971 George joined The Boston Consulting Group in Boston.  He returned to Australia and co-founded Pappas Carter Evans and Koop (PCEK) in 1979 which merged with The Boston Consulting Group in 1990. 

George is Chairman of the Committee for Melbourne and holds a Bachelor of Economics with First Class Honours from Monash University (1968).

Professor Steve Wesselingh

Professor Steve Wesselingh

Professor Wesselingh BMBS, PhD, FRACP, initially trained as an Infectious Diseases Physician and then completed a Ph.D.  In 1993 he was appointed to the Faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as Assistant Professor.  Professor Wesselingh then returned to Australia in 1994 to set up the Neuro AIDS Research Unit within the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at Flinders University.   From 1994 to 1997 he was on the Board of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) and in 1998 he was elected President of ASMR.  In January 1999 Professor Wesselingh was appointed Professor and Director of the Infectious Diseases Unit, The Alfred Hospital, Monash University School of Medicine.  This unit incorporates the Victorian State-wide HIV/AIDS service and the Victorian HIV palliative care unit and is involved in the care of the majority of HIV patients in Victoria, Australia.  In 2002 Professor Wesselingh was appointed as Director of the Burnet Institute.  Professor Wesselingh is a both a practicing Infectious Diseases Physician and clinical researcher.  His research interests are mainly in the areas of neurovirology (including Neuro AIDS and chronic fatigue syndrome), vaccine development and microbicide development.  He has published over 110 scientific papers in peer reviewed scientific journals.

Mr John Bullwinkel

Mr John Bullwinkel

John is Head of Private Bank, Queensland for ANZ Banking Group after having previously been Head of Investments at InterFinancial Limited, a boutique investment banking firm. He was also the founding Director of Private Banking for Deutsche Bank in Australia has wide experience in investments and banking through senior roles at Merrill Lynch and ABN AMRO in International Private Banking, through to leading the Corporate/Multinational and Commercial Banking units for Citibank and NatWest.

John is a qualified accountant in Australia and holds the Professional National Accountant registration. He is also registered with the Australian Securities & Investments Commission and has been a licensed Securities Dealer on the New York Stock Exchange (Series 7) and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

John serves on the Board of the Monash University Medical Foundation with a focus on the Vivian Bullwinkel Memorial Fund as Patron.  He is immediate past Chairman of St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School Foundation and a past Chairman of Youth Off The Streets.

Professor David Copolov

Professor David Copolov

Appointed senior Advisor, Office of the Vice Chancellor, Monash University in 2004. Nineteen years as Director of the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria.  Professor of Psychiatry at both the University of Melbourne and Monash University.  Currently holds, or has held, several advisory appointments to the Australian Federal and State Governments.  Research interests in schizophrenia, particularly in examining why people hear distressing voices and how they can be better helped to cope with this symptom.  Has made seminal contributions in this field of research, as well as in related biological investigations of psychotic disorders.

Ms Barbara Crook

Ms Barbara Crook

Ms Crook is also a member of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board.  Ms Crook’s energy and experience for the past decade has been in the legal and professional services industry, overseeing internal change and the merger of two significant law firms. 

She was most recently the CEO of Hunt and Hunt following her Executive General Manager role at Allens Arthur Robinson.  Her early career saw her in teaching and then, in managerial roles in the consumer goods industry including Uncle Ben’s, Country Road and ADI. 

She was later recruited by the Smorgon Group as General Manager of the ARC Division Operations, with ultimate responsibility for supplying most of Australia’s large infrastructure projects.

Mr Ron Fairchild

Mr Ron Fairchild

As Vice-President, Advancement at Monash University, Mr Fairchild's responsibilities include: advancement, marketing, media communications, student recruitment, alumni activities, event management and overseeing the university's performing and visual arts programs. Mr Fairchild has an outstanding international record in advancement activities, particularly in the field of fundraising. He began his fundraising career in 1983 and has since directed and supervised campaigns for more than 100 organisations. He has wide experience in advancement within the higher education sector and has previously worked with or consulted to the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, Australian National University, the University of Sydney and the University of Auckland. A certified fundraising executive, Mr Fairchild has a Bachelor of Human Kinetics from The University of Windsor, Canada and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2000 he was honoured as the Fundraising Executive of the Year for the Toronto chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the largest fundraising chapter of the world.

Dr Jack Hansky

Dr Jack Hansky

Physician and gastroenterologist, an Honorary Associate Professor at Monash University, Emeritus Gastroenterologist Monash Medical Centre, counsellor for the Gut Foundation of Australia, Vice President Mount Scopus College Foundation and life member American Gastroenterology Assoc., GE Society Australia, Royal Australasian College of Physicians.  From 1963 until 2002 Jack was Physician and Gastroenterologist at Prince Henrys Hospital and Monash Medical Centre.  He is past President of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and formerly Chairman Senior Medical Staff Prince Henrys Hospital, Chairman Senior Medical Staff, Medical Advisory Committee Monash Medical Centre and Member board of Management MMC.  He has co-authored over 300 scientific publications.

Mr Lionel Krongold

Mr Lionel Krongold

Executive Chairman of the Krongold Group of Companies, a privately owned Melbourne based Investment Company. In 1973, Lionel succeeded his father as principle of KH Consolidated Industries, a steel manufacturing operation. He then acquired Stramit Limited in 1985 and in 1986 listed the combined businesses operating as KH Stramit Limited. As one of Australia’s largest steel manufacturing companies, it had operations in every state of Australia as well as being strategically located throughout SE Asia. After selling the business a few years later, Lionel expanded the private investment arm of his family business and created what is known today as The Krongold Group of Companies. The Group are involved in business acquisitions, property development, and construction. It is also the major shareholder in Voyager Travel Corporation, Australia’s largest private corporate travel management company. Lionel is a current member of the Epworth Hospital Medical Foundation, a past director of the Essendon Football Club and has served on the boards of various companies both private and public. Lionel brings to the Monash University Medical Foundation a broad range of business acumen and experience.

Professor Leon Piterman AM

Professor Leon Piterman AM

Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences at Monash University, Professor of General Practice and Head of the School of Primary Health Care.  Professor Piterman is also a member of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board.  He is expert in General Practice education,  establishing Australia 's largest and most successful university-based diploma/masters program for general practitioners.  Almost 1,000 GPs locally, nationally and internationally have now participated in this course since its inception in 1992.  Special interest in primary mental health and cardiovascular disease.  Chair of several Faculty Committees, including the Faculty Foundation Working Group and the International Advisory Committee.

Mr David Pitt

Mr David Pitt

Mr Pitt is also a member of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board.  He is Vice-President, Finance (Chief Financial Officer) at Monash University and oversees the financial management, funding and capital works programs of Monash world-wide. Previously held several senior positions at Telstra, most recently as Director of strategic projects, where he was responsible for strategic analysis, mergers and acquisitions, business restructuring and evaluating major investment proposals. During his time at Telstra, he developed and implemented the company's new superannuation scheme and developed the strategy for implementing the early rollout of Telstra's Pay TV cable network. His experience as a company director includes the boards of various high technology and communications organisations, international start-ups and joint ventures. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a member of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and has a first class honours science degree majoring in pure mathematics and statistics, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from RMIT.

Dr Lior Rauchberger

Dr Lior Rauchberger

Graduated from Monash Medicine in 1997.  Founded Medseed, a medical software company producing mobile computing and decision support systems.  Holds a Masters of Entrepreneurship degree and has worked as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry and an advisor for several start-up ventures.  Currently is Executive Director of Urban Intelligence, a company that specialises in smart technology and automation systems.

Mr Rob Thomas

Robert Thomas

Mr Thomas is also a member of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board and is currently Senior Advisor, Citigroup Australia. He has over 30 years experience in the securities industry. He ultimately became Chairman of the Citigroup Global Corporate and Investment Bank, retiring from that position in 2004. 

He is the Chairman of two ASX listed companies, Heartware Limited and Australian Wealth Management Ltd and is on the Board of Virgin Blue Ltd.  He is Chairman of the Security and Derivatives Industry Association, Director of Grahger Capital Investments, a member of the Library Council of NSW and remains a consultant to Citigroup Australia. 

He is a Master Stockbroker, Fellow of the Securities Institute of Australia and Fellow of the Institute of Company Directors.  Mr Thomas gained a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University (1966).
