Mr Rod Chadwick (Chair)
Mr Chadwick is also Deputy Chair of the Monash University Medical Research Advisory Board. He was, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Dunlop Ltd from 1995 to 2001. Currently, he is a business consultant and a company director of several Australian companies and, as well, holds advisory board membership for Oracle Corporation, Australia and New Zealand. He is the immediate past National Deputy President of Australian Industry Group. As an industry leader, his past positions include the Chair of Population Policy Steering Committee, Business Council of Australia; member of the Committee for Melbourne; Director of the Australia/Japan Business Cooperation Council; and member of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai, China. Mr Chadwick is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.
Professor Christina Mitchell (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences)
Professor Christina Mitchell graduated with a degree in Medicine from Melbourne University and undertook general physician and haematology training fellowships. She obtained a PhD from Monash University, concentrating on the anticoagulant activity of protein S, and graduated with a Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Physicians and also a Fellowship in Pathology. She then undertook a 3 year post-doctoral fellowship at Washington University purifying phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) signal-terminating enzymes. Professor Mitchell returned to Australia as senior lecturer in Medicine at Monash University and Box Hill Hospital, she became Associate Professor soon after, while also conducting research on the newly emerging family of enzymes, inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatases, negative regulators of PI3-kinase signalling. In addition, she held a position of Professor and Head of Biochemistry Department at Monash University (2000), until being promoted to Head of School of Biomedical Sciences (2006-present). The major research direction of her group is to characterise the metabolic pathways that regulate phosphoinositide signalling, in particular PI 3-kinase signalling in human cancer. Professor Mitchell has practiced as a general physician from 1990 to 2000 and as a specialist haematologist from 1990 to 2011 in the Department of Haematology at Box Hill Hospital. She has a long commitment to the development and integration of the medical curriculum at Monash University.
Professor Mitchell has published over 100 papers and received numerous awards, including Monash University 50th Anniversary Research Award (2008) and Dean's Prize for Excellence in Research (2003). In addition, Professor Mitchell serves on editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and IUBMB Life.
Professor Mitchell was a member of the scientific committee for the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria (2001-2010), served on several NHMRC review panels for both project grants and fellowship applications and has been a member of the board of VESKI (Victorian Endowment for Science, Knowledge and Innovation).
Professor Mitchell and her research team are the recipients of several National Health and Medical Research grants, an ARC grant and a Muscular Dystrophy Association of the USA grant. Her research laboratory comprises seven post-doctoral fellows, a research assistant, seven PhD students and three honours students.
Mr John Bullwinkel
John Bullwinkel is the National Executive Director ANZ Private Relationships for ANZ Private based in Melbourne area. John joined ANZ in 2008 where he was Head of ANZ Private Queensland within the ANZ Banking Group, after previously being Head of Investments at InterFinancial Limited, a boutique investment banking firm. He was also the founding Director of Private Banking for Deutsche Bank in Australia and previously held senior roles in investments and banking at Merrill Lynch and ABN AMRO, Citibank and NatWest.
John is a qualified accountant in Australia, is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants and also holds a Diploma in Financial Services. He is registered with the Australian Securities & Investments Commission and has been a licensed Securities Dealer on the New York Stock Exchange (Series 7). John is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
John is involved with several not-for-profit organisations. He is a former Chairman of St Aidan's Anglican Girls' School Foundation in Brisbane. John is also a past Chairman of Youth Off The Streets in Sydney which assists needy and homeless young people of Sydney who have been severely abused and neglected.
Professor David Copolov OAM
Professor David Copolov OAM, is an alumnus of Monash University. He obtained his Master of Psychological Medicine in 1986.
David is a Pro Vice-Chancellor at Monash University, a role through which he is involved in a broad range of strategy and policy development areas across the University's many portfolios.
David is a Professor of Psychiatry and Honorary Professor of Physiology at Monash and Professorial Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne. He is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, a Director of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), a Director of the Bio21 Cluster, and a Fellow of both Queen's College and St Hilda's College at The University of Melbourne.
David's area of expertise has been research into and the treatment of schizophrenia and related disorders. He was the Executive Director of the Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) of Victoria from 1985 to 2004, publishing more than 230 peer reviewed articles and an investigator on many national competitive grants.
David has held several advisory appointments to the Australian Federal and State Governments including 12 years as a member of the Victorian Ministerial Advisory Committee on Mental Health and eight years as the psychiatric expert on the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee.
Ms Barbara Crook
Barbara Crook's energy and experience for the past decade has been in the legal and professional services industry, overseeing internal change and mergers in the legal profession for prominent national firms Hunt & Hunt and Allens Arthur Robinson. 's
Barbara's early career saw her in teaching and in managerial roles in the consumer goods industry including Uncle Ben's, Country Road and ADI.
She was later recruited by the Smorgon Group as General Manager of the ARC Division Operations, with ultimate responsibility for supplying most of Australia's large infrastructure projects.
Barbara is also a member of the Monash Institute of Medical Research Advisory Board.
Mr Tony D’Aloisio (BA 1971, LLB(Hons) 1973)
Mr Tony D'Aloisio was the former chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) until May 2011. He is an alumnus of Monash University, holding a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. He was chief executive partner at Mallesons Stephen Jaques between 1992 and 2004, a company he joined in 1977 as a commercial lawyer. His principal areas of practise were mergers and acquisitions, taxation and restrictive trade practices, and international trade and investment. Tony was managing director and chief executive officer of the Australian Stock Exchange from 2004 to 2006. He was appointed as a commissioner of ASIC in late 2006 and was named chairman in early 2007.
Dr Dan Evans
Dr Dan Evans has had two professional careers covering the mining and professional services sectors. After 26 years with WMC Resources where his final role was Vice President Exploration - Africa/Eurasia, Dan has spent the last 13 years in management consulting. He was a strategy partner in Accenture focused on the global mineral resources industry.
Currently, Dan is the Principal of Executive Compass, a management consultancy specializing in business strategy he founded in 1991.
Dan holds Bachelor, Masters and PhD degrees in geology from various USA and Canadian universities and an MBA from Melbourne Business School. He is Deputy Chairman of Business for Millennium Development (B4MD) and a Director of Summer Foundation. Dan is past Chairman of RMDSTEM and member of Scope's Risk & Audit Committee.
Dan is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and AusIMM.
Mr Ron Fairchild
Mr Ron Fairchild joined Monash in 2005 as the Vice-President (Advancement), his responsibilities include the Monash+ fundraising campaign; donor relations; alumni relations; donor and alumni services; the University's Academy of Performing Arts and the University's Museum of Art.
He has an outstanding international record in advancement activities, particularly in the field of fundraising. He began his fundraising career in 1983 and has since directed and supervised campaigns for more than 100 organisations.
He has wide experience in advancement within the higher education sector and has previously worked with or consulted to:
- the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada
- Australian National University
- the University of Sydney
- the University of Auckland.
He has directed and supervised campaigns for more than 100 organisations that have raised in excess of US$700 million. A certified fundraising executive, Mr Fairchild has a Bachelor of Human Kinetics from The University of Windsor, Canada and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2000 he was honoured as the Fundraising Executive of the Year for the Toronto chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the largest fundraising chapter in the world.
Peter Hudson AM
Renowned as a champion Australian Rules football player, Mr Peter Hudson is considered one of the greatest full-forwards in the game's history, equalling the Victorian Football League record of 150 goals in a season with Hawthorn during the Hawks' 1971 grand final victory.
Peter also played senior football for Tasmanian clubs New Norfolk and Glenorchy, and coached the latter to premiership success in his first season. He also topped the goalkicking lists in Tasmanian competition and won its highest individual honour, the William Leitch Medal, on two occasions.
Post-VFL/TFL career, he has been actively involved in the community both in his home state of Tasmania and in Melbourne, including an extensive involvement with the Leukaemia Research Foundation.
In 1979 Peter was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours list in recognition of his services to Australian football. He is a 'Legend' of the Australian Football Hall of Fame and a life member of the AFL and the Hawthorn Football Club.
An experienced businessman with extensive experience in sports management, Peter is a former chief executive officer of the Hawthorn Football Club. He is presently Head of Market Development at health insurer Bupa Australia, enabling him to bring a particular insight into health and wellbeing to the Foundation board.
In December 2011, Peter was made an Honorary Fellow of Monash University in recognition of his substantial contribution to the Monash community through sport, administration, business, health promotion and research.
Mr Lionel Krongold
Lionel Krongold is Executive Chairman of the Krongold Group of Companies, a privately owned Melbourne based Investment Company. In 1973, Lionel succeeded his father as Principal of KH Consolidated Industries, a steel manufacturing operation that acquired Stramit Limited in 1985 and in 1986 was listed as KH Stramit Limited - one of Australia's largest steel manufacturing companies with operations in every state of Australia and throughout South East Asia.
After selling KH Stramit, Lionel expanded the private investment arm of his family business creating what is known today as the Krongold Group of Companies. This Group is involved in business acquisitions, property development, and construction, and is the major shareholder in Voyager Travel Corporation, Australia's largest private corporate travel management company.
Lionel is a current member of the Epworth Hospital Medical Foundation, a past director of the Essendon Football Club and has served on the boards of various companies both private and public.
Professor Leon Piterman AM
Professor Leon Piterman is an alumnus of Monash University. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine in 1990.
Leon is Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University's Berwick and Peninsula Campuses, and Professor of General Practice. Leon previously held the position of Head of the School of Primary Health Care and Senior Deputy Dean / Deputy Dean - International of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
Leon established Australia's most successful university-based Graduate Certificate / Diploma / Masters programs for general practitioners distance education programs producing over 1300 graduates worldwide.
Leon's research interests are in the areas of mental health, chronic disease, clinical audit and medical education. He has published widely with over 100 refereed publications and lectured nationally and internationally on clinical and educational issues related to general practice and primary care mental health. Leon is co-author of General Practice Psychiatry, a text for students and practitioners.
In 2006 Leon was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for services to education in family medicine including research, training and distance education of rural and overseas doctors.
Mr David Pitt
David Pitt was appointed as Vice-President (Finance) and CFO of Monash University in August 2005. David oversees the financial management, funding and capital works programs of Monash operations worldwide. He previously held several senior positions at Telstra, most recently as Director of Strategic Projects where he was responsible for strategic analysis, mergers and acquisitions, business restructuring and evaluating major investment proposals. During his time at Telstra, he developed and implemented the company's new superannuation scheme and developed the strategy for implementing the early rollout of Telstra's Pay TV cable network.
David's experience as a company director includes the boards of various high technology and communications organisations, international start-ups and joint ventures.
David is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a member of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia.
David holds a First Class Honours Degree in Science majoring in pure mathematics and statistics, a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Melbourne and an MBA from RMIT.
Mr Robert Smorgon AM
Robert Smorgon was involved in the Smorgon Group of Companies from 1965 until 1995, primarily within its paper, moulded products and steel mill operations.
Robert was responsible for the acquisition of recycled paper resources used as raw material for paper mill operations. In 1970 he became involved in the moulded products business and from 1975 was responsible for the running of these operations. He later gained responsibility for Metal Recyclers, a business securing raw material for Smorgon's steel operations and was also responsible for sales and marketing.
In 1998 Robert was appointed a Director of Smorgon Steel on formation of the Company and was a member of its Nomination and Remuneration Committee until 2001.
Robert is Deputy Chairman of the Jack & Robert Smorgon Families Foundation, which provides financial support to hundreds of charitable organisations. He is also a member of the Board of the family company Escor and Chairman of JNF Victoria.
Robert served as Deputy President of the Kew Hebrew Congregation and is a Trustee of the Synagogue.
He is a member of the Dean's Advisory Board within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
Robert was a Board member of the Australian Council of Children and Youth Organisations (ACCYO) introducing national accreditation for all agencies working with children and youth from its inception in 2001 until July 2009 when it was merged with the Australian Childhood Foundation.
Robert was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in January 2011. He is the recipient of a commendation from Victoria Police for his work with Victoria's young people.
Mr Rob Thomas
Rob Thomas is an alumnus of Monash University. He obtained his Bachelor of Economics in 1967.
Rob was appointed to the TOWER Australia Board in August 2007 and is the Chairman of the Company. He is a member of its Remuneration and Nominations Committee and its Investment Committee.
Rob has in excess of 35 years experience in the investment and securities industry. He was CEO and subsequently Chairman of Citigroup Australia and New Zealand from the late 1990s until his retirement in 2004.
Rob is presently the non-executive director of Heartware International Limited, Virgin Blue Holdings Limited, REVA Medical Limited, O'Connell Street Associates Pty Limited and a member of the Advisory Board of global merchant bank Nomura. Rob is also Chairman of the Stockbrokers Association of Australia and President of the Library Council of New South Wales.
