Background:
HOLLT is an international multi-centre randomised clinical trial aimed at assessing the impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) on acute complication rates and long term outcomes following severe musculoskeletal trauma with soft tissue injury.
Aims:
To conduct a multi-centre, randomised controlled clinical trial to investigate the efficacy of early hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct in the management of severe, open lower limb fractures.
Method:
The study will enrol 120 patients with severe, open tibial fractures. Eligible patients will be randomised to either receive 12 sessions of HBO or to not receive HBO during the acute phase of care. Enrolled subjects will be followed up for 2 years with radiological, clinical and quality of life measures.
Results:
The study has enrolled at a slower rate than originally hoped for. Plans are to work within the original five year grant timelines to continue and complete the acute enrolment and primary outcome determination phases of the project. The long term follow up of some patient's secondary outcome data will probably need to continue subsequent to the expiry of the grant but it is our aim to have the publication of the primary outcomes achieved at the end of the existing grant period.
