Suitable for
This course is open to anyone (clinicians, students, researchers etc) who would like to understand the use of qualitative research methods and begin learning how to use them. Attendees do not need previous experience or knowledge of qualitative research methods, although experience of, or ideas about, a research project where you might wish to use these methods would make the course more relevant.
Aims

The course is intended to give a detailed introduction to qualitative research methods, particularly as used in the study of health and illness, public health research and in health services research. This introduction is intended to enable participants to plan and commence a qualitative research project

Overview

A mixture of presentations and hands-on activities will be used to introduce participants to qualitative research methods. Over the two day program the following topics will be discussed:

  • What is qualitative research?
  • When does a research topic require qualitative research methods?
  • Study designs that use qualitative research methods: mono and mixed method studies
  • Selecting the most appropriate qualitative format to address the research question;  
  • Overview of data collection methods
  • Sampling strategies
  • Interviewing: devising schedules/checklists of topics, interview strategies and techniques, recording equipment, transcription
  • Focus groups: design and implementation, tips and facilitation techniques
  • Ethnography and observational methods
  • Data analysis: content, thematic, discourse, constant comparison, developing descriptive accounts, theorising
  • Computer-assisted analysis of qualitative data
  • Writing up qualitative research findings
Participants will engage in some practical data collection and analysis exercises  and some time will be spent on ‘working up’ attendees' research ideas.
