| Aims: |
This course will help you decide if your patient is fit to undertake air travel. It will give information on the typical airline cabin environment, and how this environment can adversely interact with certain medical and surgical conditions. Participants will be introduced to international passenger health guidelines, and through a group discussion of some clinical cases they will be able to use this information to practise informed fitness-to-fly decision-making.

| Overview: |
The course covers information on cabin environment, discussion on a variety of medical and surgical conditions, current guidelines discussed, case discussions and decision making exercises. Short presentations will provide the basic information necessary to the participants. Each presentation will be followed by a question/answer session to ensure adequate understanding. Case studies in small groups will encourage participants to practise their new skills and knowledge, and allow instructing staff to give appropriate feedback.
After the course participants should be able to
- understand the physiological impact of the flight environment
- understand the effect of the flight environment on various medical conditions which their patients may have
- be able to use international passenger health guidelines to assess the fitness of their patients to undertake air travel

RACGP, RNZCGP and RCNA & NZ Nursing Association Continuing Medical/Nursing Education Points
Courses are eligible for RACGP QA&CPD Program Category 2 points for the 2005-2007 triennium. The RNZCGP has a reciprocal arrangement with the RACGP under which members attending CME run by an RACGP accredited provider can claim CME credits. Courses are endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia for CNE points as part of the RCNA Life Long Learning Program (3LP).
The NZ Nursing Assocation accepts these courses towards continuing education hours.
