Aims

This course will cover the principles of injury epidemiology, prevention and control.  The unit will provide an introduction to the injury epidemiology and prevention field with a particular focus on issues facing injury surveillance, countermeasure development, injury policy and injury outcomes. 

Overview

On completion of this unit, students will have an understanding of:

  • The concept of injury as a preventable health condition
  • The burden of injury
  • Principles of injury prevention and control
  • Data requirements and injury surveillance
  • The strengths and limitations of research methods used to define the nature and extent of injury
  • Development of injury prevention programs, frameworks for countermeasure development and their evaluation
  • Approaches to injury policy and legislation
  • Issues in the measurement of injury severity, definition, burden and outcome
