Course

Logistic Regression using Stata

Convenor

A/Prof Rory Wolfe

Date

July 29, 2010

Time

9:30am - 4:30pm

Venue

The Alfred Centre. Seminar room 2, Level 5, 99 Commercial Rd Melbourne VIC 3004 Australia

Suitable for

People who: 1) are familiar with basic statistical concepts such as two-way tables, odds ratios, confidence intervals, chi-square tests and p-values, 2) have not encountered logistic regression before, and 3) who are familiar with, or have undertaken an introductory workshop to, Stata statistical software.

Aims

To provide a thorough introduction to logistic regression concepts and methods. To highlight its role as a mechanism to quantify confounding and effect modification (i.e. mediating and moderating effects of variables on an exposure-disease relationship). To discuss strategies for conducting logistic regression with many explanatory variables. To provide training that enables people to perform logistic regression in the Stata 11 statistical software package.

Overview

  • Mantel-Haenszel stratified odds ratios
  • Logistic regression equivalence to M-H approach
  • Interpretation of coefficients in the logistic regression model
  • Binary, continuous and categorical covariates
  • Confounding and effect modification in logistic regression
  • Logistic regression and multiple covariates
  • Case-control studies
Catering Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided
