Course Objective
|
The objective of this course is to provide an introduction to the principles of human health risk assessment. It will cover the basic elements of risk assessment such as hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose response and risk characterization, and illustrate how these concepts are incorporated into risk based decision making in environmental health. It will also address approaches to risk management and strategies for effective risk communication. The short course is presented in conjunction with a Unit taught in the Master of Public Health Program. Registrants may elect to register for individual days or for the entire 3 days. At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- appreciate the basic concepts of health risk analysis and their applications to environmental health issues
- understand the sources, nature and uses of toxicological and epidemiological data to identify environmental hazards and the toxicokinetic principles behind the extrapolation of dose response relationships
- appreciate the methods used to assess exposures and manage the variability and uncertainties in exposure assessment
- illustrate the use of these concepts to characterize and make quantitative estimates of risk
- Appreciate factors which may influence community perception of environmental health risks, and how to engage in dialogue about such risks.
