Hendrik Zimmet graduated in Medicine (MBBS) from the University of Melbourne in 1995 and completed his internal medicine training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He then undertook further advanced training in internal medicine at the Alfred Hospital and subsequently became the Clinical Supervisor of the Monash University Central & Eastern Clinical School at the Alfred.
Following this, Dr Zimmet pursued training in cardiology at the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne and then as a senior cardiology registrar at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. During this time, he worked for six months at the Royal Darwin Hospital as one of only three cardiac clinicians in the region where rates of rheumatic heart disease are amongst the highest in the world.
Dr Zimmet became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2005 and a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia & New Zealand in 2006. He is a Consultant Cardiologist based at the Heart Centre at the Alfred and is currently undertaking a PhD, at Monash University, investigating the use of adult stem cells in the treatment of heart failure. He has received scholarships from both the Cardiac Society of Australia & New Zealand and the National Heart Foundation of Australia.
Dr Zimmet has presented scientific research findings at both local and international scientific meetings.
