Ewan MacFarlane studied biological sciences, graduating from the University of Tasmania in 1998. Subsequent studies at Monash University lead to a Master of Public Health awarded in 2001, specialising in occupational and environmental health. In 2001 Ewan also completed the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists Basic Principles of Occupational Hygiene certificate course. He is currently working towards a PhD studying associations between cancer incidence and workplace exposures.

Since joining MonCOEH in 2001, Ewan has worked on a variety of studies of occupational research studies including studies of workers in Aluminium and Lead industries, the military and agricultural sectors as well as occupational disease surveillance. His interests include exposure assessment, occupational cancer, respiratory diseases, record linkage between large datasets for research, workers’ safety-related behaviours and risk communication/risk perception. He also has an interest research ethics and governance issues.
