Lisa Demos is a pharmacist and pharmacologist on secondment from the Alfred Hospital. She qualified as a pharmacist in 1976, undertook a graduate diploma in hospital pharmacy in 1978 and completed a PhD in pharmacology at Monash University in 1990. Lisa has worked in hospital pharmacy and in clinical pharmacology at the Alfred Hospital establishing a therapeutic monitoring service for anticonvulsants and aminoglycosides and undertaking several studies aimed at optimising drug usage. She has a range of expertise that includes clinical trial design, drug assay, drug use evaluation, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacoeconomics and intervention strategies to change prescribing behaviour.
Lisa has undertaken a short course in epidemiology and statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and has assisted Prof John McNeil on a range of projects including reviews of water fluoridation, caffeine, weight loss therapies, reference-based pricing, health services costing studies, randomised clinical trials and an evaluation of medical examinations. Apart from work with the Department Lisa also works with the Ambulatory Care Australia (ACA) and the Australian Disease Management Association (ADMA) where she is the editor of The HITH Review and the DM Review, and is a researcher with the Alfred Department of Community and Ambulatory Care.
