Dr Cui completed a PhD in statistics from La Trobe University in 1997. He was a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Genetic Epidemiology of the University of Melbourne during 1998-2003, and a Research Scientist at the CSIRO during 2003-2004. 

James joined the Department of Epidemiology & preventive Medicine as a Senior Research Fellow in 2005. His research interests lie in statistical methods for the analysis of longitudinal studies, survival analysis of correlated data, statistical analysis of genetic family studies, and modelling of the HIV/ADS epidemic. He has published more than 30 research papers in peer-reviewed journals.
