Michael is the senior statistician for both the Alfred Hospital and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC).
Michael has been the Alfred hospital statistician since 1996 and joined the ANZIC-RC in 2007. Michael has published extensively (see list below) in high impact medical journals and has established an international reputation as a leading biostatistician.
Michael is currently a member of the ANZIC CORE (Centre for Outcomes and Resource Evaluation) Committee, which oversees the availability and utilisation of critical care resources, patient outcomes, mortality, disease patterns and the effectiveness of critical care interventions. An integral part of this work includes analysis of data from the APD (Adult Patient Database) which has patient information on over one million patients admitted to intensive care wards since 1993.
Having published a PhD on using statistical techniques to predicting sporting outcomes, Michael is also often sought by the media for his unique research that enables him to accurately assign probabilities for sporting events such as AFL football's Brownlow Medal.
