Project Outline
This research project represents a unique study, which will set out to listen to some of the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to ask them what they believe and understand to be risk factors for chronic disease. It will begin to develop a foundation for greater understanding within the health community, and in particular, identify how service providers and governments can enhance their current service provision and health promotion strategies to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to better meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for improved health outcomes. In doing this, this research project attempts to answer three broad questions:
-
What evidence is there that provides an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s beliefs about factors contributing to Chronic Disease?
-
What interventions have been attempted and what strategies have been effective for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples based on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s beliefs about factors contributing to Chronic Disease?
-
What do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people believe would be appropriate interventions?
