Prof Wayne Velicer (Presenter), Prof Brian Oldenburg (Chair)
"Understanding Individual Behaviour Change over Time."

Wayne F. Velicer is the Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention Research Center at the University of Rhode Island and Professor of Psychology. He has published more than 250 papers on a variety of topics in Health Psychology and Behavioral Statistics. In Health Psychology, his contributions include pioneering the application of computer-based intervention to health promotion and disease prevention. He is one of the principal developers of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change. He has been instrumental in developing multiple risk factor interventions and theories. He has developed advanced quantitative methods for theory testing. In Behavioral Statistics, his work has focused on factor analysis and component analysis, pioneered the application of time series analysis to the behavioral sciences, and refined methods for measurement development. He was identified as one of the highest impact authors in Psychology (average citation per paper) by the major studies in 1992, 1996, 2003, and 2005 with a current "h" factor exceeds 50.

Prof Jaakko Tuomilehto, Professor of Public Health at the University of Helsinki, Finland.
He is also affiliated with the Diabetes Unit of the National Public Health Institute, Helsinki, Finland and holds positions as a Visiting Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the Danube-University Krems, Austria. He initiated the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study, the landmark study for the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes, and also the large collaborative DECODE and DECODA studies on the prevalence and outcomes of hyperglycaemia.

Writer-In-Residence, The Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine Oxford, UK. Mr Keating is well-known for his excellent biography of Sir Richard Doll, who was a leading epidemiologist in the second half of the 20th century. Doll is best known for his work documenting the harmful effects of cigarette smoking. The presentation will be:

Which covers the acrimonious battle with RA Fisher about whether the association of smoking with lung cancer was causal.
