Recent ACHHRA activities
Working with Commonwealth and State government agenciesACHHRA has supported Commonwealth and State government agencies in managing environmental health risks, through participation in expert advisory panels, preparation of risk assessment guidance documents and peer review of reports. It has assisted HHRA workforce development for governments and the commercial sector through training programs and workshops. Australasian College of Toxicology & Risk AssessmentACHHRA supports the Australasian College of Toxicology & Risk Assessment (ACTRA). Prof Priestly served on the ACTRA Management committee through 2007, and has served as ACTRA’s President since 2008. ACTRA is in the process of establishing a peer-reviewed Register of Australasian toxicologists and risk assessors to assess the competence and professional achievements of those who may want to engage in professional practice. Technological developmentProf Priestly has been active in issues relating to technological development, including the safety assessment of food produced by GM technology, and the newly emerging nanotechnologies. NanotechnologyProf Priestly chaired the NHMRC Advisory Committee on Health & Nanotechnology, established late in 2007 to develop research strategies on OHS issues and biomedical applications of the nanotechnologies. SymposiaACHHRA hosted a successful symposium Challenges in Environmental Toxicology in Australia, hosted in July 2006. PublicationsThe special Australian issue of Journal of Toxicology & Environmental Health was an outcome of the Challenges in Environmental Toxicology in Australia symposium.
