Research

Major Research activities in the Eastern Health Clinical School involve gastroenterology and nutrition and neurology.

Gastroenterology and nutrition:

Gut disorders are a significant burden on the health and wellbeing of the Australian community:

  • 1 in 100 Individuals have Coeliac Disease
  • 1 in 200 individuals have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis & Crohns’ Disease)
  • 1 in 7 individuals are affected by Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Diet therapy, which is commonplace for the management of coeliac disease, is underdeveloped for the other chronic intestinal diseases. Eastern Health Clinical School conducts a major program in the application of diet in the therapy and prevention of such diseases (see below).

FODMAPs and their role in gut symptoms

  • FODMAPs are poorly absorbed short-chain carbohydrates in the diet. They play an important role in the genesis of gut symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Crohn’s disease.
  • Our research laboratory has established techniques to measure FODMAP content of foods
  • Our physiology laboratory conducts routine hydrogen and methane breath testing for fructose, lactose and sorbitol mal-absorption, and to support our clinical studies.
  • Information for health professionals and patients

Other areas of Research

  • Non-coeliac gluten intolerance – understanding ‘wheat- & gluten- intolerance’ in individuals who do not have coeliac disease
  • Understanding ‘fatigue’ in coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases

The School offers student postgraduate opportunities in these areas. Students interested in undertaking research at Eastern Health Clinical School should contact Dr Jane Muir.
