Hydrogen and Methane along with Helicobacter Pylori Breath Tests are conducted at the Monash University-Eastern Health Clinical School (EHCS) Breath Testing Centre.

Breath Hydrogen and Methane tests are used to determine if an individual has Fructose, Lactose or Sorbitol Malabsorption or, Proximal Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO.) A patient would usually benefit from having these tests if they are experiencing unexplained and unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation. These sugars (fructose, lactose and sorbitol) are found in many common foods in the diet and are a known cause of these symptoms. This is due to the sugar is not being absorbed in the small intestine, instead is transferred through to the large intestine where bacteria will ferment it and produce gases, including hydrogen and methane. The production of these gases and the size of the sugar molecules can then lead to the symptoms mentioned above. Providing us with a referral for these test is optional. This is only necessary if both the patient and the practitioner would like a copy of the results and to indicate which tests the practitioner wishes the patient to complete.

Helicobacter Pylori breath testing is used to determine if a helicobacter bacterial infection is present in the stomach. A doctor will assess if and why a patient may need a helicobacter pylori breath test and a referral form is always required for this test.

All proceeds from our Monash University, Eastern Health Clinical School Breath Testing Centre going directly toward further research into the development of new dietary strategies for Coeliac disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We are proud to provide a breath testing service based on the most up-to-date information on procedures and dietary strategies to improve symptoms in these patient groups.
