The development of a paramedic simulation scale
Patient simulations are an essential link for health care educators between the virtual world of teaching and learning and the visceral world of the patient. Patient simulations offer teaching staff the necessary resources to provide students with the optimal learning environment in which to learn and safely rehearse psychomotor skills, team co-ordination and communication skills and other patient care skills. They also offer the opportunity for students to view the roles of other health care professionals in action in clinical contexts as well as the different health care disciplines collaborating together on multidisciplinary health care teams. In addition, patient simulations are now being considered as alternatives to traditional clinical placement education and training.
This study will undertake a mixed methods approach involving paramedics attending several workshops on simulation in paramedic education and training. The aim of approaches is to develop a list of potential items that are deemed to be important for paramedic simulation. Following these workshops, further statistical analysis will be undertaken to determine if agreed upon items are suitable as a simulation evaluation tool.
