Are paramedic students ready for interprofessional education?

The Productivity Commission and the National Institute of Health and Welfare have produced reports that have detailed Australian health workforce shortfalls. Both bodies have made recommendations for dealing with these issues that involve IPE (interprofessional education), improved education and training for students and staff and more effective collaboration between stakeholders. Reviews and evaluations of health care systems indicate that medical and health treatments and services are becoming more complex and interrelated.  As educators we must better prepare graduates for the dynamic realities of contemporary health care.  IPE has been suggested as a viable solution in achieving this.

The objective of this study will be to assess the extent of empathy in paramedic students across eight Australian universities [Monash University, University of Tasmania, Victoria University, Latrobe University, Charles Sturt University, Queensland University of Technology, Central Queensland University, Edith Cowan University].
