Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Rural Health Practice

This course is offered by the Monash Schools of Nursing and Rural Health through the Gippsland campus.

The course addresses the multicultural complexity of Australian society and current socio-political and economic issues affecting nursing and healthcare.

This four year double degree course aims to develop a graduate nurse who is expected to be committed to the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health and wellbeing and to the prevention of disease in rural communities. The first level practitioner will be skilled in the delivery of holistic health care; be able to apply an extensive body of knowledge from relevant disciplines in a range of practice settings; be skilled in problem-solving and clinical reasoning; be competent and safe in the practice of clinical nursing skills and practice safely and competently in accordance with legal and ethical standards of nursing practice, the Australian Nursing Council Inc. (ANCI) National Competency Standards and Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses.

comprehensively prepare graduates to a standard consistent with the identified needs for establishing and sustaining a career in rural nursing practice.

The first two years of the course are identical to the Bachelor of Nursing. The last two years of the course prepare students to function safely and effectively in a variety of rural practice settings.

Student will develop:

  • A broader range of primary assessment skills, and
  • Advanced generalist practice skills consistent with addressing rural health crises including medical, obstetric and mental health emergencies, rural road trauma, and farming and industrial accidents.

Students will expand their ability to plan and provide health education, health screening and health promotional activities. They will extend their insight into the implications of multidisciplinary collaborative care, rural health issues and practice, and the health problems, patterns and needs of diverse population groups, including Indigenous Australians.

Registration

Students, having satisfactorily completed three years of this course and the requirements for the Bachelor of Nursing, will be eligible to apply for registration in Division 1 of the register by the Nurses Board of Victoria, or its equivalent.
