Re-Registration Program For Registered Nurses (Division 1)
And
Overseas Registration Program For Nurses Wishing To Obtain Registration In Victoria (Division I)
The aim of this program is to enable registered nurses (both Australian residents and international students with overseas nurse registration) to update their theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in order to meet Division I registration requirements with the Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV). The program will therefore be of interest to registered nurses who currently do not meet that requirement and also to nurses who are currently registered, but who may need to update their knowledge and skills in preparation for re-entering the work force.

Objectives
On successful completion of the course students will be expected to:
- meet currently accepted standards of nursing practice as set down in the A.N.C. Inc. (1990) National Competencies for the Registration and Enrolment of Nurses in Australia;
- provide holistic nursing care as a first-level practitioner in a variety of health care settings compatible with the broad health care needs and goals of Australia¹s multicultural society;
- practice effectively and safely, and maintain legal and ethical standards of practice;
- identify the health care needs and problems of individuals and groups of people in a variety of settings;
- plan, implement and evaluate care activities which encourage individuals and groups to achieve independence or self care in achieving and maintaining optimal levels of health;
- appreciate the importance of political, social and professional forces currently influencing health care practice;
- understand the importance of participating in further education.
Length and duration of the course
Four subjects form the basis of the theoretical content plus 6 weeks of clinical practice (240 hours). The course is offered full time at the Peninsula campus commencing in March each year, and part-time at the Gippsland campus commencing in either March or July.
This course is made up of four subjects from the Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration).
Entry Requirements
- Applicants are required to write to the Nurses Board of Victoria (N.B.V.) to obtain confirmation in writing of their eligibility for Division I nurse registration.
- Applicants will be considered for enrolment, if they can show evidence of having previously completed a General Nursing Course or equivalent course that would have enabled them to practice as a Registered Nurse.
Clinical experience
Students must complete a minimum of six weeks of full-time clinical practicum. The clinical focus will be on acute care and psychiatric/mental health.
Monash University has on-going clinical placement agreements with a number of clinical venues where clinical supervision will be undertaken by preceptors. Insurance will be covered by the compulsory Monash University Student Amenity fee.
Students will be expected to meet the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine "Infectious Diseases Policy" and obtain appropriate immunisation. The policy document is available from the School Administration Office. Police checks are be required.
Clinical objectives
- Demonstrate safe clinical practice in an acute care setting based on sound theoretical principles;
- Provide total, holistic and individualised care according to relevant nursing care principles under the supervision/preceptorship of registered staff;
- Conduct and document comprehensive assessments of the needs of patients utilising a patient profile tool;
- Evaluate self-performance in terms of the delivery of quality nursing care.
Students will be assessed according to the Australian Nursing Council Inc. (ANCI) competencies.
Course Transcript
On successful completion of the course each student will receive a certificate of completion and registration documentation will be forwarded to the Nurses Board of Victoria.
Fees
Australian and international students must enrol in the Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration) course as the same course fees apply.
There is an additional fee for the clinical placement (6 weeks) unless the student is sponsored.
Application Procedures for International/Overseas Student
Applicants who do not hold Australian residency status must firstly apply for the Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration) through Monash International. Four designated subjects of this course make up the requirements for overseas students to obtain Division 1 nurse registration in Victoria.
Applicants are also required to write to the Nurses Board of Victoria (N.B.V.) to obtain confirmation in writing of their eligibility for Division I nurse registration.
The course fee varies each year and is the same as the fee for the Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration). An additional charge will be levied for the clinical practicum.
