Dean's Introduction

Professor Steven Wesselingh

Monash is unique among Australian medical schools in having undergraduate and postgraduate curricula spread over metropolitan, rural and international sites, with Australian Medical Council accredited undergraduate degrees in Melbourne and Malaysia and a postgraduate degree at our Gippsland Medical School.

The continuing growth of the Faculty's strength in bioscience is notable.   A significant number of the departments in the School of Biomedical Sciences were recently ranked number one in the country, and the Faculty has an outstanding record in the area of competitive Government grant funding.  On the Clayton campus we are developing Australia's leading bioscience campus, with national and international leadership in biomedical science and ongoing recruitment and platform and infrastructure developments to maintain and build on this reputation.

Our research clusters on the precincts of Monash Medical Centre and The Alfred Hospital lead Australia in their areas of strength and provide the faculty with enormous opportunities. The affiliated, but independent medical research institutes on these precinct (such as the Baker, Burnet and Prince Henry's Institute) highlight the strength of research. We are moving towards a seamless integration of our biomedical and public health research excellence with clinical excellence at our research clusters, producing a model that ensures both our international competitiveness and, importantly, an impact on health outcomes and work-force development. Critical to this process is strength in public health and clinical sciences and our Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine has also been recently ranked number one in the country.

I am optimistic and enthusiastic about the possibilities and challenges in the years ahead and look forward to the Faculty consolidating its position as a national and international leader in the fields of health and medical research and education.
