It is well established in STEM – Science (including medical and clinical), Technology, Engineering and Maths - disciplines that as careers progress a disproportionate number of women are lost from the research workforce. The gender profile in the Discovery Precinct at Monash is similar to other STEM disciplines; at early career stages there are equal proportions of men and women but by later career stages it is typical that less than 20% of Professors are women. One consequence of this imbalance is that women are under-represented in leadership positions and on senior management teams.
We are committed to putting practices in place to reverse this trend and increase the proportion of women at senior levels and to increase the number of women in leadership positions.
To progress the development and implementation of a Gender Equity Plan, the three Discovery Precinct Institutes, the Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience (ICCN) and the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) have established a joint Gender Equity Committee (GEC).
The GEC will develop a GE Plan and undertake a specific series of initiatives to ensure we develop a working environment in which everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential irrespective of gender.
Current GEC initiatives include:
- Unconscious bias training for all senior staff involved in making decisions that impact on research careers. To be completed by end 2015. Training will be extended to include all Laboratory heads by end of 2016.

- Mentoring Program for promotion. Run by senior female Professors, this Mentoring Program ensures female staff enter the promotion process at the right time and with the strongest possible applications

Inspiring Women in Leadership. An annual event with guest speakers aimed to help promote and develop leadership capabilities in women at different career stages.
