BCH 3022: Cellular Organisation: Organelle structure and function in health and disease
NOTE: THIS UNIT IS NOT BEING OFFERED IN 2005
This subject offers the advanced basis for understanding the major themes in Cell Biology. It is a basic Biomedical/Science subject that should be taken for all those embarking on careers in Biotechnology and Biomedical Science involving cell structure and function.
- The role of organelles and cellular structures in disease processes.
- The cytoskeleton, the formation and organisation of the various membranes of the cell, the trafficking of proteins within various compartments of the cell, the internalization of proteins and other molecules into cells and the export of proteins from cells.
- Intracellular trafficking as well as the fates of diverse cargo proteins are considered.
- Development of the concept of the cell as a semi-independent biological entity in constant contact and communication with an extra-cellular environment and with other cells in multi-cellular organisms.
