Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the course entry requirements?
Monash admission requirements for all undergraduate courses are as follows:
English language requirements
All applicants must meet the University's minimum English language requirements, which can be found at:
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/applications/undergraduate/entry/english.html
Applicants must have achieved a satisfactory level of performance in English at Year 12 or equivalent. For VCE students, this means a study score of at least 25 in units 3 and 4 in any VCE English subject.
For those who have not met this requirement, you must have completed at least the equivalent of the first year of a university course (if this institution is outside Australia, you must have completed this within the last two years), or at least the equivalent of a two year tertiary program (this includes a two year TAFE diploma).
Prospective students should also note that graduates need to have a full (unrestricted) driving licence to be employed by some ambulance services, including the Metropolitan Ambulance Service in Melbourne.
- How do I apply for the course?
Applications are made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). This is done online at:
http://www.vtac.edu.au
Applicants must also complete an additional application form that is available from:
http://www.med.monash.edu.au/beh/
Please note that you must list this course as a preference through VTAC AND complete the additional application form to be considered for a place in this course.
- How do you rank applicants?
All applicants must provide responses to the questions listed in the Monash application form referred to above. These responses, along with ENTER score (for Y12 applicants) or most recent post-secondary results for non-Y12 applicants, are used to rank applicants. Please note that post-secondary results need to be graded to enable the calculation of a grade point average (GPA). Competency based (pass/fail) results cannot be used to rank applicants.
- What ENTER score do I need?
We do not publish a “clearly in” ENTER score as other criteria are used to assess applicants. However, Year 12 applicants will need an ENTER of > 85 to be competitive. Please note that this score will vary from year-to-year as the cut-off is influenced by the number of places available in the course and the number of applicants listing the course as a preference.
- Is this course offered part-time or by distance education?
No. The course is only available in a full-time on-campus mode at the Peninsula campus of Monash University.
- Are there any other prerequisites for admission?
Students must pass a prescribed medical and fitness assessment undertaken by an approved agency. This is a prerequisite for participation in clinical placements with ambulance services. Students who receive an offer of a place in this course need to undertake this assessment (at a cost of approximately $200) during scheduled dates prior to the commencement of the first semester of study. Students must also apply for a police record clearance and “Working with Children” check and comply with any other legislation that affects the student’s capacity to undertake clinical placements.
- Will I be eligible for any credits for prior learning?
All students are entitled to apply for credits where they can demonstrate that previous study covers content contained in units of study comprising the Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) course.
Graduates of nursing, biomedical science, human movement and related courses may be eligible for admission to the second year of the course (credit for year 1). Assessment of eligibility will be made on an individual basis. Prospective students will be advised of their credit (if applicable) at the time of enrolment (late January/ early February).
- Are there clinical placements in the course?
Yes. Students will need to complete supervised clinical placements with Victorian ambulance services and with other health agencies. Please note that travel will be involved, as all students must undertake placements in rural or regional areas with Rural Ambulance Victoria. Students are responsible for travel, accommodation and living expenses.
- Do I need to purchase uniform items?
Yes. The Monash University Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice will lend students a hard hat and a reflective vest for use while on ambulance placements. Students must return this equipment cleaned and in good order at the completion of the clinical placement. Charges apply for lost or damaged items. Students must purchase specified overalls for ambulance placements as well as a pair of boots and a wet weather jacket. The cost per set of overalls is approximately $170, with boots costing approximately $90 and a wet weather jacket costs approximately $185. A clinical uniform for placements with non-ambulance health agencies is also required. The cost for the minimum set of one shirt and one pair of trousers is approximately $100.
- How much is the course?
There are both Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) and full-fee places available. Information on course fees and other costs is available from:
http://www.monash.edu.au/fees/
- Can I transfer from another course?
Only current Monash students can apply for a course transfer. Information is available from:
http://www.med.monash.edu.au/beh/
- What should my other options be if I don’t receive an offer?
You might want to consider listing courses such as nursing or health science as other preferences through VTAC. If you enrol in these courses at Monash you may be eligible to apply for an internal course transfer after completing one year of study. However, this is competitive and certain conditions apply (see point 11 above).
- Can I talk to someone about the course?
Yes. Please contact Joanne Bigley (9904 4368) for general course information. You can also make an appointment to speak with the course coordinator by sending an e-mail to: Bill.Lord@med.monash.edu.au.
