Associate Professor Kate Loveland

NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Senior Scientist

Associate Professor Loveland has a joint appointment with the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Kate is recognised internationally for her research into the mechanisms that underpin testis development and germ cell differentiation. Her research has demonstrated key switches in the molecules that regulate cell fate decisions, most notably, relating to members of the pleiotropic TGFb superfamily of ligands and recently Hedgehog signaling.  A focus on nuclear transport, in collaboration with Professor David Jans, has identified a new mechanism by which spermatogenesis is regulated. Associate Professor Loveland has active collaborations with research groups around Australia, in Denmark, the US and Japan which underpin the work of her students and postdoctoral fellows. She holds an NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship and was recognised by the American Society for Andrology as the 2004 Young Andrologist, their highest distinction for a developing researcher. She is currently a Chief Investigator and Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Development, a virtual, national collective of scientists working together to unravel the mysteries of male gamete formation and function. A/Prof Loveland is an an editor for several specialist journals and has over 90 publicationsthat reflect her keen interest in discovering how cells change from one state of differentiation to the next.
