Histological Laboratory Services

The Histology Laboratory is a facility in the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology and produces world class Histology. This facility services not only Monash University, but Hospitals and other Universities. The Laboratory is open from 8am until 6pm Monday-Friday.

Services

This facility is designed to cope with the high throughput of academic staff and students (including over 70 registered users). For paraffin based histology the laboratory is equipped with a dissection area, processing stations, microtomes (5x rotary and 2xbase sledge) and a staining area; and for frozen sectioning, 2 cryostats and 2xCO2 freeze bench microtomes. 2 digital cameras are also available for digital microscopy.

Histology charges

Paraffin Sectioning

  1. Processing (cassette): $6.00 (ex GST)
  2. Microtome use (per slide): $1.50 (ex GST)
  3. Microtome use (per hour): $10.00 (ex GST)

Frozen Sectioning

  1. Cryostat use (per hour): $10.00 (ex GST)
  2. Cryostat Uuse (per slide): $1.50 (ex GST)

  1. Haematoxylin and Eosin: $1.50 (ex GST)
  2. Peridoic Acid Schiff’s: $2.50 (ex GST)
  3. Masson’s Trichome: $3.00 (ex GST)
  4. Other as requested

Digital Microscopy

Camera use (per hour): $40.00 (ex GST)

Staff

Associate Professor Jeff Kerr

Director of Histology Laboratory, has been a member of the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology for 30 years. Author of Atlas of Functional Histology (Mosby, 1999).

Mr Ian Boundy

Laboratory Manager, has worked in the Histology field for 40 years. Has experience in clinical histopathology as well being involved with academic and research institutions, one of the country’s leading histologists. Further skills include museum techniques, electron microscopy and cytology.

Ms Debbie Plunkett

Histology Technician, she has worked in the field for 10 years. Has experience in both private and hospital histopathology laboratories. Skills also include immunohistochemistry.
