EMBASE database now available!

The Library has recently obtained a license to the EMBASE database. EMBASE is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals. It is recognised that up to 40% of EMBASE records are not included in Medline. Library staff can demonstrate how to do a combined Medline/EMBASE search via the Ovid platform, to maximize retrieval of relevant research information. EMBASE is particularly strong in pharmacology applications, but also covers medicine, psychiatry and nursing. A link to EMBASE can be found on the library's homepage.

Library services for La Trobe University Clinical Nursing School
In 2005 the Library entered into an agreement with the La Trobe University Library to provide onsite library services to La Trobe nursing students, and staff of the Clinical Nursing School based at the Alfred. Nursing students were this year again provided with an orientation to the Library at the start of their hospital rotation in March. As part of the Library agreement, La Trobe students are able to have material couriered from any La Trobe library to the Ian Potter Library. Feedback on Library services from students was very positive in 2005, and use of the Library so far this year is looking strong.
Medical students learn evidence-based clinical practice
Monash University medical students receive training in evidenced-based clinical practice during their 3rd year. Library staff are involved in teaching computer skills which give students the ability to identify relevant evidence-based information sources to answer questions relating to patient care. This is an important skill for future clinical practice. This year hands-on classes were conducted for 54 medical students utilising the newly furnished computer laboratory in the Monash medical school building.
Medical books for Eritrea
Eritrea opened its first medical school in 2004, the Orotta School of Medicine in Asmara. With a ratio of only one doctor for every 50,000 head of population, a major priority for Eritrea is educating more health workers. In 2005, the Ian Potter Library in conjunction with the Centre for International Child Health at the Royal Children's Hospital, was able to provide a number of boxes of high-quality medical books to support the development of a medical library for the medical school. The Library plans to send over another consignment of medical texts shortly, which are desperately needed by the medical students.
Helping Japan's health librarians
The Ian Potter Library was visited in March by Prof. Yoko Kowata, from Aichi Prefectural University, Nagoya, Japan. Prof. Kowata was researching the educational and professional backgrounds of hospital librarians in Australia, she will write up her findings in a book to be published in Japan. The professional standing of hospital librarians in Japan is generally much lower than in Australia, and Prof. Kowata hopes to help improve the services of health libraries in Japan by examining what can be learnt from our experience.
